Massachusetts: Red Sox Infielder Caleb Durbin Has Right Foot Surgery on Oct. 29, Explaining a Season Played Through Injury

Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts — Boston Red Sox infielder Caleb Durbin underwent surgery on his right foot on Oct. 29 to address a previously undisclosed older injury, NESN reported Oct. 30. The procedure was described as a partial excision of the fifth metatarsal base with tendon repair.
Durbin played through the injury all season. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told The Boston Globe the team had known about the foot problem and that Durbin insisted on continuing to play. It was Durbin's second operation of the offseason: the Red Sox announced on Oct. 11 that he had undergone reconstruction surgery on his left pinkie finger, which he first injured in June and aggravated in August.
Durbin finished the regular season batting .248 with a .332 on-base percentage and a .378 slugging percentage, and was named an American League Gold Glove finalist at third base, alongside teammates Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu. The team said the foot surgery was successful, and his recovery will determine whether he reports to next season at full strength — also answering fans' questions about his late-season fluctuations in form.
