Michigan: Tigers Acquire Taiwanese Infielder Tsung-Che Cheng From the Red Sox on Oct. 30

Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan — The Detroit Tigers announced on Oct. 30 that the club has acquired 25-year-old Taiwanese infielder Tsung-Che Cheng from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations, an early offseason move to add infield defensive depth, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Cheng is a left-handed hitter who plays primarily shortstop and can also cover second and third base. In 2026 he appeared in 14 major league games for Boston, batting .256 with one double and five RBIs, starting 13 of them at shortstop. The Tigers said Cheng has played 485 games at shortstop, 155 at second base and 40 at third across all levels, and that his defensive flexibility is what the club values. After the trade, the Tigers' 40-man roster stands at 36.
Cheng joins fellow Taiwanese infielder Hao-Yu Lee on the Tigers, giving Detroit two infielders from Taiwan.
