Pennsylvania: Woman's Undeclared Cartier Jewelry Worth Over $250,000 Seized at Philadelphia Airport, CBP Says

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — A Pennsylvania woman arriving at Philadelphia International Airport from Amsterdam on Oct. 25 was stopped by customs officers for failing to declare high-value jewelry, and Cartier pieces worth more than $250,000 were seized, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Oct. 30.
The woman, a Global Entry member, was referred to a secondary baggage inspection, where officers found a Cartier bracelet she had purchased for $183,818 and a Cartier ring worth $67,811 — together more than $250,000. Because she did not declare the jewelry and is suspected of violating federal customs law, CBP seized the pieces and will revoke her Global Entry membership.
Elliot N. Ortiz, CBP's area port director for Philadelphia, said Global Entry offers expedited clearance to pre-screened, low-risk travelers, but members must obey U.S. law and truthfully declare goods bought abroad, and violators can have their membership suspended or revoked. Travelers who frequently fly between China and the United States should not assume personal-use luxury goods such as brand-name jewelry and watches are exempt from declaration.
