Utah: Utah Prison System Fully Lifts Lockdown on Oct. 29; Both Prisons Resume Normal Operations

Friday, October 30, 2026 · City · GSM News

Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah — The Utah Department of Corrections announced on Oct. 29 that the lockdown at the state's two prisons has been fully lifted and normal operations restored, according to reporting updated Oct. 30.

The two facilities are in Salt Lake City, in Salt Lake County, and in Gunnison, home to the Central Utah Correctional Facility. The lockdown had been in place since Sept. 24, after an inmate reportedly attacked an officer at the Central Utah facility, and lasted more than a month; both prisons were locked down. During October, as the investigation proceeded, the department gradually lifted the lockdown in selected housing units. With the full lifting, restored activities include regular programming, visitation, recreation, education and religious services.

Corrections Commissioner Jared Garcia confirmed the full lifting in a statement, which did not disclose the findings of the investigation into the attack that triggered the lockdown or the current condition of the officer who was reportedly assaulted. Prison lockdowns are a standard control measure after security incidents; a prolonged lockdown affects inmates' visitation, education and religious activities and weighs on their families. The full lifting means daily order at both prisons has returned to normal, though details of the original attack investigation remain undisclosed.
