Maine — The Maine Department of Education's October 30 update leads with a Wabanaki Studies Resource Guide for Native American Heritage Month in November, inviting educators and communities to engage students in learning about the enduring presence, contributions and rich cultures of the Wabanaki Nations, who have lived in the place now called Maine for more than 13,000 years.
The department also reminded districts that $5.9 million in state funding is available to reimburse retrofitting school buses that do not have front crossing arms, up to $3,000 per bus for equipment and labor; the program runs through June 30, 2027.
In addition, Pine Tree Programming returns for a third year, bringing hands-on computer science to students through after-school activities with micro:bit boards; the department has launched a statewide Computer Science Landscape Study covering computer science, computational thinking, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity in schools; and applications for the 2026-2027 Student Cabinet are open until November 15.
