Federal Election Monitors to Staff 7 Cass County Polling Sites on November 3 as Justice Department Covers All 50 States, Far beyond 24 in 2022

Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota — Cass County election officials confirmed on October 30 that federal election monitors will be present at seven polling sites in the county on Election Day, November 3, to observe whether voting procedures comply with federal law.

According to North Dakota Monitor reporter Michael Achterling, the deployment is part of a large Justice Department oversight effort covering all 50 states, a significant increase from the 2022 midterms, when observers were sent to only 24 states. Local election officials told the Monitor the department has communicated its plans and that seven sites will have monitors present.

Under North Dakota rules, federal poll observers must not interrupt voters within 100 feet of a polling location; they may only observe and may not intervene in voting. Cass County is North Dakota's most populous county, with Fargo as its seat, and its polling sites cover the city and surrounding communities.

Justice Department civil rights monitors sent to some states in past elections likewise only observed. This year's nationwide deployment comes amid peak early and mail voting, and how state election officials coordinate with federal observers is a focus in the final days before the election. Whether other counties will also host monitors was not addressed in the reporting.
