New Hampshire Proposes Six-Month Medicaid Redeterminations for Expansion Adults: Written Comments Due October 30, Applying from January 1, 2027

Concord, New Hampshire — A rule change proposed by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services would require most adults in the Medicaid expansion group to undergo eligibility redetermination every six months instead of annually. Written comments were due October 30.

The proposal amends state rule He-W 884.02 and applies to beneficiaries in the federal adult expansion category. The new cycle would apply to renewals scheduled on or after January 1, 2027, with exceptions for certain American Indian and Alaska Native beneficiaries recognized under federal law.

The department held an in-person hearing on October 23 in the Brown Building auditorium in Concord. Written comments could be sent to the department's published email address or by fax to 603-271-5590 by October 30; no specific cutoff time was published.

The department emphasized that this is a rule proposal, not a cancellation notice, and the public record does not show that any named person will lose benefits. Supporters say more frequent reviews keep eligibility information current; critics worry a six-month cycle will burden beneficiaries and administering agencies. Whether the rule is adopted as proposed, and how any transition is handled, will be decided by the department after the comment period.
