Only 78 of Vermont’s 247 Towns Have Registered .gov Domains, about a Third; Federal Cybersecurity Funding Window Closes November 30

Vermont — Only 78 of Vermont's 247 towns have registered a .gov domain, about 32 percent, according to the federal .gov registry reported by Government Technology on October 30. Three local police departments and one fire department have also registered .gov domains.

The registry shows only that a domain is registered to a government body; it does not show whether a town has fully migrated its website and email.

Vermont funds town migrations through the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program, and another funded project moves agencies to multifactor authentication, but the window for spending the federal money and completing the projects closes on November 30, leaving local governments little time.

In Dover, the October 20 selectboard meeting discussed migration, and Zoning Administrator and Town Health Officer Tabi Freedman said she has applied for a .gov domain for the town. The state's information technology officials hope to help more local governments migrate, saying .gov domains help residents recognize official websites and guard against impostors, but about two-thirds of towns statewide have yet to register.
