BLM Helicopter Roundup in Wyoming’s Red Desert Concludes: 1,035 Wild Horses Captured, 17 Dead, an Estimated 2,278 Horses across 752,694 Acres, 1,800 Removals Planned

Wyoming's Red Desert — The Bureau of Land Management this week completed its Red Desert wild horse helicopter roundup, capturing 1,035 horses, with 17 deaths: one horse died of a seizure and 16 were euthanized, including eight euthanized because of blindness.
The roundup ended on October 27 after nearly two weeks, covering the Stewart Creek and Green Mountain herd management areas, as part of a longer-term plan to remove 1,800 horses. Before the roundup, the 752,694-acre management complex was estimated to hold about 2,278 horses.
Another 52 mares will be treated with fertility control and released along with an equal number of stallions.
The results drew attention from animal protection groups to the treatment of wild horses. The bureau said new roundups will begin next week in Utah's Cedar Mountain and Swasey Mountain herd management areas.
The Red Desert gather is one of the federal government's regular operations to control wild horse numbers on western public lands.
