Film: Official Trailer for 'Prima Facie' Released: Cynthia Erivo Plays a Star Defense Barrister Forced to Reckon With the Justice System, Opening November 13 in the UK and Ireland
Sony Pictures released the official trailer on October 30 for the legal drama Prima Facie, starring Cynthia Erivo as London barrister Tessa Ensler. The film opens in cinemas in the United Kingdom and Ireland on November 13.
Tessa Ensler is a self-made trial lawyer who has built a reputation as an unmatched defender of the accused, including men charged with sexual assault. As her career takes off, she is assaulted by fellow barrister Julian, and her life is upended.
Forced to navigate the same legal process she once used to defend clients, Tessa confronts the gap between her professional confidence in the system and the reality facing survivors of sexual violence.
Directed by Susanna White and written by Suzie Miller, the film is adapted from Miller's acclaimed one-woman stage play, which previously starred Jodie Comer in its London and Broadway productions. The film version expands the story beyond the courtroom to show more of Tessa's life.
The cast also includes Daniel Ings as Julian, Noma Dumezweni, Toheeb Jimoh, Simon Russell Beale, Elizabeth Dulau and Harry Treadaway. Erivo also serves as an executive producer.
The film premiered last month at the Toronto International Film Festival. Miller and Erivo have said they hope it encourages broader conversations about sexual violence, consent and the legal system. The official trailer was released by Sony Pictures' UK channel.
