'Artificial' Submitted as a Comedy at the Golden Globes, to Compete in the Musical or Comedy Categories

Friday, October 30, 2026 · Film · GSM News

NEON has submitted Luca Guadagnino's film "Artificial" at the Golden Globes as a comedy, according to an exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter on October 30, confirmed by multiple awards outlets. The film will compete in Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, and star Yura Borisov will campaign for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. October 30 was the submission deadline for the 84th Golden Globe Awards.

Written by Simon Rich, "Artificial" dramatizes the November 2023 boardroom crisis at OpenAI, when chief executive Sam Altman was fired by the board and reinstated five days later. Andrew Garfield plays Altman and Borisov plays OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever; the cast also includes Monica Barbaro, Ike Barinholtz, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, and Mark Rylance. Garfield's campaign in Best Supporting Actor is not affected by the change, as the supporting categories are not divided by genre.

Critics have long described the film as straddling drama and dark comedy. The Golden Globes divide film contenders into drama and musical or comedy groups, and a distributor's category placement at the submission deadline is widely seen as part of awards-season strategy. As GSM previously reported, the Globes rejected Lionsgate's bid to move the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" into the musical or comedy categories. Nominations for the 84th Golden Globes will be announced on December 7, and the ceremony is set for January 10, 2027.

"Artificial" is distributed by NEON and opens in select theaters on Christmas Day, expanding in January 2027. The official teaser trailer released by NEON is embedded in this article.
