Los Angeles Prepares for Weekend Rain: More Than 31,000 Drainage Sites Cleared, Sand Ready at Fire Stations

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · City · GSM News

The Mayor's Office of the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, issued a weekend rain preparedness update on October 30: the National Weather Service forecasts light rain from Friday through Sunday, with totals under one inch, and city crews have completed drainage clearing and hillside reinforcement ahead of the rainy season and El Niño conditions.

The city said crews have cleared more than 31,000 catch basins and drainage sites and 50 debris basins, and reinforced hillsides and burn areas to reduce mudslide and flooding risk. Residents can pick up sand at fire stations to protect their homes and driveways.

Residents are urged to sign up for NotifyLA emergency alerts at notifyla.org. The next preparedness town hall is set for Thursday, November 5, at 6 p.m. in San Pedro. More readiness information is available at ready.lacity.gov and elnino.lacity.gov.
