Saturday, October 31, 2026 · States · GSM News

In Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, a floatplane crashed into Blue Fox Bay at the northern end of Afognak Island on the morning of October 30, killing one person and injuring two.

Alaska State Troopers said the aircraft was a Cessna 185 floatplane operated by Vertigo Air Taxi carrying three people. The plane crashed into the bay at 10:08 a.m. and quickly sank. Two occupants escaped, but the passenger in the back seat did not. A good Samaritan took the two survivors to a hospital in Kodiak with non-life-threatening injuries, and a second group of good Samaritans recovered the deceased passenger's body and returned it to Kodiak.

Troopers identified the deceased on October 31 as James Osowski, 33, of Kodiak, a dispatcher for the Kodiak Police Department and a volunteer firefighter with the Kodiak City Fire Department. His body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

National Transportation Safety Board personnel are traveling to Blue Fox Bay to investigate the cause of the crash, which has not been determined.
