Maui County Blesses New Electric Bus Charging Station at Kahului Transit Hub With Six Charging Ports

In Kahului, Maui County, Hawaii, a blessing was held recently for the new electric bus charging station at the Maui County transit hub in Kahului, with word of the event spreading on October 31.
Mat McNeff, Hawaiian Electric's director of Maui operations, and Tandy Tabata, the company's electrification of transportation product manager, attended the blessing. The facility was built with assistance from Hawaiian Electric's Charge Up eBus pilot program, which provided make-ready infrastructure for six electric bus charging ports.
Hawaiian Electric said the new charging facility was funded in partnership with federal, state and local entities, a collaborative effort to modernize municipal operations. Electric buses help eliminate tailpipe emissions, improve local air quality and give riders a quieter, cleaner commute.
The Kahului Transit Center, located off Vevau Street and opened in November 2024, is Maui County's bus hub next to the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center. The charging facility lays groundwork for expanding the county's electric bus operations as the county moves its transit fleet toward clean energy.
