In Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa, the state high school cross country meet produced a new record on October 31. Marshalltown senior Preston Johnson won the boys Class 4A 5-kilometer race in 14 minutes, 40.2 seconds, breaking the state meet record of 14:48.5 set just a year earlier by Quentin Nauman, a Western Dubuque graduate and University of Iowa standout — a mark that stood for only one year before falling by more than eight seconds.

Johnson said he decided to go for it half a mile into the race. Iowa City Liberty's Keegan Decker was second in 14:53.1, Johnston's Jack Crossland third in 14:55.5 and Sioux City North's Kuma Gutema fourth in 15:03.4. Johnson will continue his running career at Syracuse University.

Dowling Catholic won the boys 4A team title with 70 points. In the girls 4A race, Charlee Gall won in 17:13.0, beating the runner-up by 17 seconds — a breakthrough after she placed third as a freshman in 2024.
