Judge Orders Grand Rapids Catholic Central Reinstated in Football Playoffs, for Now

In Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, the Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School football team was ordered temporarily reinstated in the playoffs by a judge on October 30.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association had announced on October 29 that the team was removed from the Division 5 football playoffs for playing an ineligible player in six regular-season games, and was forced to forfeit five regular-season wins. The Cougars finished 7-2 and were scheduled to host Comstock Park in a district semifinal on October 30; after the removal, Comstock Park would have advanced automatically.
In a statement, the association said the court entered the order directing the team's first-round participation without giving the association an opportunity to take part in the proceedings, and that it would have presented new evidence to explain its decision. The player had been cleared in January 2026 after enrolling, when the association confirmed his eligibility; it reopened the investigation this month after receiving new information about the student's former residence and ruled he did not satisfy the "full and complete" residence-change requirement. Kent County court records show a show-cause hearing on November 6 at 9 a.m., at which the student plaintiff and the association will appear.
