Duluth's Free Warming Bus Rides Resume November 2 After 13,000 Rides Last Winter

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · States · GSM News

In Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota, the Duluth Transit Authority announced on October 31 that its free warming bus service will resume on November 2 and run through the spring of 2027, helping residents reach warming centers safely in freezing weather.

The program, launched in 2018, is designed so residents who are homeless or housing-insecure do not have to walk in dangerous cold, while connecting them with medical, housing and other outreach services. The authority said it provided 13,000 free rides last winter, 3,000 more than the year before, and expects this winter's total to exceed 13,000.

Morning buses will depart 21st Avenue West and Second Street at 7:15, 7:45 and 8:15 a.m., running directly to downtown warming and service points including the Damiano Center, the Union Gospel Mission and the Duluth Transportation Center. The Damiano Center provides food, shelter and support services, while the Union Gospel Mission offers emergency shelter and transitional services. For a port city with long, bitter winters, the authority says reliable transit is an important part of winter safety.
