North Dakota's First Gandhi Statue Unveiled at Peace Park in Bismarck, With the First Lady and Agriculture Commissioner Attending
In Bismarck, Burleigh County, North Dakota, a life-size statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled on October 29 at Peace Park in downtown Bismarck, the first Gandhi statue in North Dakota, according to a report published October 30.
The Consulate General of India in Seattle said the statue is the fifth Gandhi monument in the consulate's jurisdiction, installed with the consulate's support and technical assistance from North Dakota's Indian American community and the North Dakota Trade Office. North Dakota First Lady Kjersti Armstrong, Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring and the Indian consul general in Seattle attended the unveiling, which opened with the national anthems of the United States and India and included school students performing Gandhi's favourite hymns.
The statue stands at Peace Park, 400 East Front Avenue in downtown Bismarck. The consulate visited the state in 2024 and 2026 to meet the governor, Bismarck's mayor and leaders in agriculture, business and education, and it held a consular camp in Fargo in February 2026 and organized International Day of Yoga activities there. Peace Park was developed shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
