Houston, Harris County, Texas — Texas's U.S. Senate race took a new turn on October 31. Early voting ended on October 30 with 1,081,010 ballots cast in Harris County, more than a third of the county's registered voters and a midterm early-voting record; statewide, nearly 7 million of roughly 19 million registered voters had voted early. These are Harris County-level figures and a Texas Senate poll, distinct from national early-voting totals.

Some Texas Republicans voiced concern about the early-vote picture, with Houston Republican State Senator Paul Bettencourt saying Republican voters are lagging. Nonpartisan voting analyst Steven David, extrapolating party lean from voters' primary history, found Democratic gains in urban areas and in some conservative rural counties.

In polling, a CNN survey conducted by SSRS from October 20 to 27 among 923 likely voters found Democratic State Representative James Talarico leading Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton 49 percent to 43 percent, with a sampling error of plus or minus 4.2 points. In the governor's race, incumbent Republican Greg Abbott faces Democratic State Representative Gina Hinojosa; no Democrat has won a statewide race in Texas in nearly three decades.
