Southern California Election Preview: Los Angeles Mayor and Sheriff Races Turn on Housing, Safety and Taxes

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · States · GSM News

Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California — A Chinese-language media roundup published on October 31 laid out the main Southern California races ahead of the November 3 election across Los Angeles County, Orange County and the city of Riverside. Voters are demanding better public safety, more housing supply and faster disaster recovery, while staying wary of new taxes and government spending.

In the Los Angeles mayor's race, incumbent Karen Bass faces Councilmember Nithya Raman; both are Democrats but differ on housing construction, city management and their bases of support. In the Los Angeles County sheriff's race, incumbent Robert Luna again faces former sheriff Alex Villanueva, whom Luna defeated in 2022, with deputy recruitment, jail conditions, oversight and department management in dispute.

For Los Angeles city attorney, John McKinney emphasizes public safety and community protection, while Marissa Roy emphasizes labor, tenant rights and related litigation. In Orange County's 5th supervisorial district, incumbent Katrina Foley faces State Assemblymember Diane Dixon, with county direction, housing, coastal infrastructure and public service spending at issue. The roundup noted that cities with large Chinese communities focus on concrete governance questions, and that Chinese American political participation is moving toward grassroots offices.
