Mountain Home Air Force Base Opens New Water Plant, Shifting Supply from Aquifer to the Snake River

Mountain Home, Elmore County, Idaho — A new water treatment plant at Mountain Home Air Force Base officially opened on October 31, shifting the base's supply from the declining local aquifer to the Snake River.
The 28,000-square-foot facility is connected by a 14.4-mile pipeline to the Snake River water system. The Idaho Water Resource Board secured the water rights from C.J. Strike Reservoir and oversaw construction of the pipeline and the legal acquisition of the rights; the project broke ground in 2024.
The base had relied on the declining Mountain Home aquifer. The new plant is intended to secure a more sustainable, long-term water supply for the installation and ease pressure on local water resources.
