Montana Deputy and Woman Killed in Shooting near Eureka; Kalispell Man Arrested after Chase

Near Eureka in Lincoln County, Montana, a shooting on the night of October 30 killed Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Terpsma and 46-year-old Merrisa Walker. The suspect, 50-year-old Matthew David Dye of Kalispell, was arrested after a chase.
Lincoln County Sheriff Darren Short said Terpsma, 28, was shot and killed at 8:23 p.m. while responding with a Eureka police officer to a disturbance call at 118 Lone Pine Trail; the Eureka officer was also wounded by gunfire. Investigators later found Walker shot and killed at the scene of the original call.
Dye allegedly fled with a 7-year-old girl in the vehicle, driving south on U.S. 93; during the pursuit by Flathead County deputies he allegedly shot at and disabled two patrol vehicles. The girl was also injured and was treated at the scene and released. Dye stopped just before a roadblock and surrendered. He is being held in the Flathead County Detention Center with a deliberate homicide warrant pending.
Short said charges will be filed next week, and the Montana Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation will lead the investigation at his request.
