Michigan Approves 2027 Health Insurance Rates: Individual Premiums to Rise 14.2% on Average

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) released its final approved health insurance rates for 2027 on October 28: premiums will rise an average of 14.2 percent for individual policies and 9.6 percent for small-group plans, effective January 1, 2027, across markets that together cover more than 800,000 Michiganders.

The individual market currently covers 400,322 people. DIFS trimmed the insurers' requested individual-market average from 14.4 percent to the approved 14.2 percent, and approved the small-group average as requested at 9.6 percent. The department issued 944 objections while reviewing 18 rate filings; no filing was denied.

Increases vary widely by insurer. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan received the state's largest individual-market increase, 25.2 percent, covering 64,495 enrollees, followed by Meridian Health Plan at 24 percent. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the state's largest insurer, was approved for 12.8 percent; its Blue Care Network HMO plans will rise 11.9 percent (113,640 enrollees) and Priority Health 11.2 percent (138,048 enrollees). The small-group market covers 403,722 people.

Insurers point mainly to the cost of care: medical care and prescription drug costs are expected to rise about 10 percent in 2027. This year's increases are smaller than last year's, when 2026 rates were approved at 20.2 percent for individual policies and 11.1 percent for small groups. The figures are premium changes before federal tax credits; what any household actually pays also depends on the plan, age, location and subsidy eligibility.

Open enrollment for 2027 coverage runs from November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Consumers who want coverage to start January 1 must enroll by December 15; those enrolling between December 16 and January 15 will have coverage starting February 1. DIFS urges consumers to compare plans and subsidies with HealthCare.gov's window-shopping tool, and says its staff can be reached at 877-999-6442.
