Halloween Double Blow in the Premier League: United Lose 2-0 at Chelsea for Nine Without a Win, City Fall 1-0 at Home to Brighton

Manchester United's winless run reached nine games in all competitions as they lost 2-0 at Chelsea on Saturday, while Premier League leaders Manchester City also suffered a Halloween defeat, going down 1-0 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, Reuters reported.
At Stamford Bridge, United were the better team before halftime but paid for missed chances. Morgan Rogers scored a solo effort shortly after the break, and in the 63rd minute defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off for a second yellow card after flooring Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana in the area. Cole Palmer converted the penalty in the 64th minute despite goalkeeper Senne Lammens getting a hand to the ball, heaping more pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
United sit provisionally 16th with seven points from nine games, one point above the relegation zone. They were spared dropping into the bottom three by Nottingham Forest's 2-0 defeat at Brentford, but will fall into it if Crystal Palace take at least a point at Tottenham Hotspur later. Chelsea move up to fourth on 16 points.
City's perfect league record had been ended by Aston Villa last week, and their hopes of a quick response were undone by third-placed Brighton, who avenged their midweek League Cup loss to City thanks to Yasin Ayari's early goal. City have 21 points from nine games, with Arsenal also on 21 from eight; Arsenal will replace City as leaders if they avoid defeat at Liverpool on Sunday. Brighton have 19 points.
Elsewhere, Coventry City moved out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 home win over Sunderland, who are left bottom of the table; Bournemouth beat Leeds United 2-0 to move seventh; Forest's poor run under new manager Oliver Glasner continued with defeat at Brentford, five league games without a win; and promoted sides Hull City and Ipswich Town drew 2-2.
