Michigan Survive Rutgers 28-21: Carr Accounts for Three TDs as Wolverines Allow No Second-Half Completion

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

Michigan held off Rutgers 28-21 on October 31 at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, allowing no completed pass in the second half yet fighting all afternoon against the Scarlet Knights' big plays and its own mistakes.

Michigan totaled 427 yards, 266 of them through the air. Quarterback Tommy Carr went 22 of 27 for 266 yards and a passing touchdown, adding 54 yards and two more scores on 12 carries. Rutgers backup AJ Surace completed only three of 12 passes for 123 yards — all in the first half — including an 80-yard touchdown, and the Scarlet Knights broke a 55-yard run, the longest Michigan has allowed this season, on the way to tying the game at 21-21 in the fourth quarter on a touchdown and two-point conversion.

Carr answered with a go-ahead rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, and after the defense forced a punt, the offense ran out the clock. Michigan's seven penalties for 90 yards and two missed field goals by Trey Butkowski kept the game close; Rutgers' 249 total yards were its lowest output of the season. Savion Hiter ran 20 times for 76 yards, while JJ Buchanan caught five passes for 63 yards and Andrew Marsh seven for 51. (Reporting from Wolverines Wire's game coverage)
