Saturday, October 31, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

Illinois edged Maryland 20-17 on October 31 at SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland, as Ethan Moczulski kicked a 26-yard field goal on the final play to settle a defensive duel the visitors trailed for most of the afternoon.

Illinois quarterback Katin Houser, back quickly after hand surgery, went 18 of 32 for 223 yards with a touchdown and an interception. His 16-yard scoring pass to Brayden Trimble with 27 seconds left in the half tied the game 7-7. Maryland retook the lead on DeJuan Williams' 17-yard touchdown run to open the second half; Illinois answered with a 45-yard field goal, then took its first lead on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 64-yard touchdown run by Javari Barnett, who finished with 81 yards on six carries. Collin Dixon caught six passes for 103 yards.

Sean O'Haire's 46-yard field goal tied it 17-17 with 10:16 left, but Illinois held the ball for the final 5:45: Jordan Anderson kneeled at the 2 after a 12-yard run to bleed the clock, and Moczulski won it as time expired.

Maryland quarterback Malik Washington threw for 190 yards and ran for a touchdown, moving his career total to 4,768 yards, ninth in program history. It was the first game under interim coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim for Maryland, who lost a sixth straight to fall to 2-6 and 0-5 in the Big Ten. Illinois won a third straight to reach 5-3 and 3-2 in league play, and host Nebraska on Friday night. (Reporting from the Associated Press and the University of Maryland athletics site)
