Serbia's SNS to Elect New Leadership at December 13 Assembly: Vucic Nominated to Return as Party President

Belgrade — The main board of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) decided on October 31 to convene an extraordinary party assembly on December 13 to elect a new leadership and party bodies. SNS president Milos Vucevic told the session that he would propose former President Aleksandar Vucic as the party's new president; Vucic previously led the party from 2012 until May 2023.
Speaking at a press conference at SNS headquarters on October 29, Vucic acknowledged that the party had made mistakes during its years in power and pledged major internal reforms following its defeat in the October 25 snap parliamentary elections: a party congress within a month to elect new leadership, with changes that could replace two-thirds of the party's main board and more than half of its presidency. At the October 31 session he added that electoral defeat is part of democratic life, that he would list all of his own mistakes at the December assembly, and that the party must change its arrogance and haughtiness.
According to preliminary results released by Serbia's Republic Electoral Commission, the SNS-led list won 39.17 percent of the vote and 104 of the 250 seats, ending the party's 14-year rule; the student-backed list won the election.
