100 Voices at Disney Hall Tonight: Los Angeles Master Chorale Joins the National Chorus of Korea for the First Time

The Los Angeles Master Chorale and the National Chorus of Korea will share a stage for the first time in their histories on November 1 at 7 p.m. at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. Forty-eight Master Chorale singers and 54 singers from Korea will form a combined chorus of more than 100 voices for the concert, titled 'Building Bridges.'
Founded in 1973, the National Chorus of Korea was the country's first professional chorus and serves as its musical ambassador. Master Chorale Artistic Director Grant Gershon and the Korean chorus's conductor, In-Gi Min, will lead the performance, with pianist Lisa Edwards. A pre-concert talk with both conductors, hosted by KUSC's Jennifer Miller Hammel, begins at 6 p.m.
Each chorus will sing music from its own country and then perform in the other's language: the Korean chorus sings works by Hak-Jun Yoon and Geon-Yong Lee alongside the American spiritual 'The Battle of Jericho' and Eric Whitacre's 'Lux Aurumque,' while the Master Chorale answers with American folk songs and spirituals and several Korean works sung in Korean. The evening closes with both choruses together in Copland's 'The Promise of Living' and Hyowon Woo's arrangement of 'Arirang.' Ticket information is available from Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Master Chorale.
This season marks Gershon's 25th as the Master Chorale's artistic director. In December the chorus joins the Los Angeles Philharmonic for Handel's 'Messiah.'
