Arizona Declares State of Emergency for Two Northeastern Counties After Extreme Weather, Releases $200,000

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs on October 30 declared a State of Emergency for Navajo County and Coconino County in the state's northeast after extreme weather from October 20 to 22 brought heavy rain, high winds, hail and tornadoes to the region. The declaration releases $200,000 from the state general fund to the Division of Emergency Management within the Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA).

Navajo County formally requested state assistance on October 28. The storms caused power outages, property damage and blocked roads across the county, posing threats to residents' health and safety, county officials said.

On October 29, Governor Hobbs visited the community of Heber-Overgaard for a disaster roundtable with DEMA Interim Director Britton Holdaway, Navajo County Emergency Management Director Catrina Jenkins, Board of Supervisors Chairman Daryl Seymore, Vice Chair Dawnafe Whitesinger, Supervisor Jason E. Whiting, County Manager Bryan Layton, Fire Chief Jason Payne and other local officials, reviewing damage assessments and the county's recovery needs.

The state says the emergency funding will prioritize restoring power and road access and meeting residents' immediate needs, and that damage assessments will continue. More support may follow depending on the scale of losses confirmed in the coming days.
