San Diego Seeks Public Input on First Full Balboa Park Master Plan Update Since 1989

On November 1, the City of San Diego, San Diego County, California, announced that it is seeking residents' input on updating the Balboa Park Master Plan — the plan's first comprehensive update since 1989. The city is asking park users about how they use the park day to day and how they would rank improvement priorities, including cultural offerings, accessibility measures, amenities and the use of idle spaces.
The city said the work was announced on October 14, 2026, that a public engagement plan is expected in late November, and that the full update is slated for completion in 2028. The city also explained that the planning process itself does not amount to approving or funding every proposed improvement project. Residents can learn more through the city's published Balboa Park planning contact email.
Balboa Park is an important public green space and cultural district near downtown San Diego, and this update will shape the park's facilities and activity spaces for years to come; the city hopes to hear from residents who use the park regularly before drafting the plan.
