Salt Lake City Residents Urge Council to Oppose Pipeline; Nearly 1,300 Signatures Gathered

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · Society · GSM News

On November 1, at a Salt Lake City Council work session in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, residents urged council members to oppose an oil pipeline proposed by HF Sinclair near Emigration Canyon and the east bench foothills. Speakers warned that a leak could threaten neighborhoods, drinking water, foothill recreation areas and wildlife habitat, citing the 2010 Red Butte Creek oil spill as a local warning. Jack Stauss, executive director of Save Our Canyons, said the organization has collected nearly 1,300 signatures against the project in about two weeks.

Council Chair Alejandro Puy said council staff will ask HF Sinclair to present again at the November 10 work session; the company has not yet confirmed whether it can attend. At the same meeting, the council joined Mayor Erin Mendenhall in a joint resolution declaring November Native American Heritage Month in Salt Lake City. For residents, the pipeline's route and the city council's authority over it remain the most-watched open questions ahead.
