More Than 4,000 Brigham Nurses Issue Strike Notice for Nov. 12

On November 1, registered nurses at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, acting through the Massachusetts Nurses Association, issued notice of an open-ended strike to begin at 7 a.m. on November 12. The nurses said the move follows their vote to reject what Mass General Brigham called its last, best and final offer; the talks center on contract terms that protect patient safety and recognize nurses' professional value.
The Brigham nurses' bargaining committee represents more than 4,000 registered nurses at the hospital, and the 10-day strike notice was issued on November 1. Under the current schedule, the two sides return to the bargaining table on November 9 to try to reach a fair contract before the strike begins. The association said the strike demands include ensuring safe patient care conditions that meet the needs of nurses, patients and the community, and that community members have supported the nurses throughout the negotiations. The hospital had not issued a new response in the source material available at press time.
The Massachusetts Nurses Association, founded in 1903, is the state's largest union of registered nurses. If it goes ahead as scheduled, the walkout would be one of the largest open-ended nurses' strikes in Massachusetts history, and hospital scheduling and patient appointments across the Boston area could be affected; patients should watch for further notices from the hospital.
