Follow-up: NYC Marathon Wheelchair Champions Decided: Hug Wins Eighth Title by One Second, Debrunner Dominates

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

The professional wheelchair races at the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon were decided on Sunday, November 1, in New York: Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men's wheelchair race in 1 hour, 28 minutes, 14 seconds, and Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland won the women's wheelchair race in 1 hour, 40 minutes, 2 seconds. The open elite races were still in progress, with the champions yet to be decided; a further follow-up will be published once those results are final.

The men's wheelchair race produced the closest finish in the event's history. Hug and Daniel Romanchuk of the United States traded the lead throughout, separated by less than a second at 20K, 25K, 30K and 40K. Hug reached the Central Park finish first in 1:28:14, with Romanchuk second in 1:28:15, a margin of just 1.13 seconds. David Weir of Great Britain was third in 1:35:38.

It was Hug's eighth New York City Marathon men's wheelchair title, extending his own event record. He won his seventh title last year in 1:30:16; this year's winning time was about two minutes faster.

Debrunner, 31, dominated the women's race, building a lead of nearly two minutes by 10 miles and winning in 1:40:02, more than eight minutes ahead of five-time New York champion Tatyana McFadden of the United States (1:48:28). Defending champion Susannah Scaroni of the United States was third in 1:48:32.

Debrunner previously won in New York in 2023, when she set the course record of 1:39:32 that still stands; Sunday's time was 30 seconds short of her own record, and it gave her a second New York title.

The race was the 55th New York City Marathon, with nearly 60,000 runners crossing all five boroughs in the 50th anniversary year of the five-borough course. The wheelchair divisions started first, at 8 a.m. Eastern, followed by the elite women at 8:35 a.m. and the elite men at 9:05 a.m. (Times are preliminary New York Road Runners results, as published by NBC Sports.)
