Michigan Senate Race Twist: Stevens Appears With Republican Rival Rogers at a Detroit Church

Detroit, in Wayne County, Michigan, saw an unexpected scene days before the election on November 1: Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens appeared alongside Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers at Perfecting Church. She had originally been scheduled to attend a unity event the same day with Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
Stevens lost this year's Democratic primary to El-Sayed by about one percentage point. The two clashed publicly last week: Stevens demanded that El-Sayed denounce an outside group's ad blaming higher prices on U.S. support for Israel's war in Gaza, and El-Sayed responded with a statement pushing back and removed Stevens from his campaign events. El-Sayed told reporters he did not want the fight to become a distraction.
Outside the church, Stevens told reporters about her support for investing in Black businesses, saying that was the policy Mike Rogers would pursue. Her fiance, Jason Turkish, has previously said publicly that he will vote for Rogers rather than El-Sayed.
Michigan's Senate seat is seen as one of the most consequential battlegrounds of this year's midterms, with polls showing El-Sayed and Rogers within a narrow margin. Democratic state Sen. Mallory McMorrow told CNN last week that she had no idea what Stevens was doing. How the public feud affects the November 3 vote remains to be seen on election day.
