Ducks Rally From 3-0 Down to Beat Senators 6-3: Gauthier Hat Trick Powers Six Unanswered Goals
ANAHEIM, California: The Anaheim Ducks scored six unanswered goals to rally from a 3-0 first-period deficit and beat the Ottawa Senators 6-3 at Honda Center on Sunday night, November 1, as Cutter Gauthier recorded his second career hat trick with two goals 36 seconds apart early in the third period.
Ottawa scored on three of its first seven shots: Philip Tomasino tipped in Thomas Chabot's shot at 6:00 of the first period, Claude Giroux snapped home a rush from the right circle at 7:02, and Michael Amadio made it 3-0 on a breakaway at 17:37. The Ducks, who had lost seven of their previous eight games, went to the first intermission down three.
The comeback began when Ottawa's Shane Pinto mishandled the puck in his own zone and Gauthier lifted it home from in close at 1:35 of the second period. Judd Caulfield pushed a loose puck across the line at 3:33 to cut it to 3-2. After Anaheim killed three penalties, including a 19-second 5-on-3, Caulfield tipped Tristan Luneau's point shot on the power play at 19:18 to tie the game 3-3.
Anaheim's power play took over in the third. Gauthier scored the go-ahead goal on a 5-on-3 one-timer from below the right circle at 1:50, then completed his hat trick 36 seconds later on the ensuing 5-on-4 from nearly the same spot. Rookie Roger McQueen added the Ducks' fourth power-play goal of the night at 15:19, as Anaheim went 4 for 5 with the man advantage.
Caulfield finished with two goals and an assist, Leo Carlsson had three assists and Luneau two assists. Goaltender Laurent Brossoit, recalled from the San Diego Gulls of the AHL on Saturday, made 19 saves in his first start for Anaheim. Giroux had a goal and an assist for Ottawa and Jonas Johansson made 27 saves; the Senators (9-6-1), who had won 5-1 at San Jose on Saturday, have lost three of their past four. Anaheim improved to 6-7-1.
