Dvořák's New World Symphony on May 29 and 30, With Bartók's First Violin Concerto
The Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, hosts a San Diego Symphony Masterworks program on May 29, 2027, at 7:30 p.m. and May 30 at 2 p.m. Conductor Joshua Weilerstein leads the orchestra; concertmaster Jeff Thayer solos in Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 1, Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, From the New World, closes the program, and Gideon Klein's Partita for Strings opens it.
Written in 1893 while Dvořák directed the National Conservatory in New York, the New World Symphony carries in its slow movement an English horn melody in the manner of a spiritual, among the most widely known passages in classical music. Bartók's First Violin Concerto, written in 1908 as a love letter and published only after his death, precedes it. Klein, a Czech composer who died in a Nazi camp in 1945, has seen his music revived in recent decades.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels. The season closes in the same hall the following week with Beethoven's Ninth.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians; its music and artistic director is Rafael Payare.
