India's Railway Minister: India Plans to Begin Exporting Complete Vande Bharat Trains Within Three to Four Years

India's Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in Bengaluru on November 1, while flagging off a new Vande Bharat sleeper train, that India plans to begin exporting complete Vande Bharat train sets to overseas markets within three to four years. He said Indian-made components, including propulsion systems and bogies, are already exported to countries such as Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy and the United States.
Exporting complete train sets first requires developing standard-gauge versions that meet other countries' railway specifications; the state-run RITES is leading the design and development of the export versions. According to figures the Railway Ministry gave Parliament in March, India's exports of rolling stock and components totalled about 260 billion rupees between the 2016-17 fiscal year and January 2026.
The Vande Bharat is India's domestically developed semi-high-speed train series. The Bengaluru-Mumbai sleeper service launched on November 1 covers 1,118 kilometres in about 16 hours, with 16 coaches and 823 berths; it is the third Vande Bharat sleeper service to enter operation.
