First 5 San Bernardino Gives Away 5,000 Free Books on Five-City Literacy Tour

First 5 San Bernardino, in San Bernardino County, California, wrapped up its "Gift a Kid a Book" Pop-Up Literacy Tour in October: from October 19 to 23, the tour stopped in San Bernardino, Big Bear Lake, Ontario, Victorville and Upland, giving away 1,000 books at each stop, 5,000 in total.
According to the county, children age five and under at each stop chose four books to keep, plus one wrapped "Gift for My Friend" book to share the habit of reading with a peer. The tour kicked off on October 8 at the C.U.T.E. Trunk or Treat event.
First 5 San Bernardino Executive Director Cindy Faulkner said the campaign has given away more than 50,000 books since its launch, aiming to put books of their own in young children's hands before they start school.
First 5 San Bernardino is funded by California Proposition 10 tobacco tax revenue and focuses on health, learning and family support for children from birth to age five.
