Long Beach Seeks Public Input on Renaming César Chávez Park and Related Sites at Three Sessions

Monday, November 2, 2026 · City · GSM News

The City of Long Beach, in Los Angeles County, California, is seeking residents' input on removing the Drake Chavez name from a set of city assets, with three input sessions scheduled: a virtual session on Thursday, November 5 at 5:30 p.m.; an in-person session on Saturday, November 7 at 10 a.m. at the Jenny Oropeza Community Center at César Chávez Park, 401 Golden Avenue; and a session on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Doris Topsy-Elvord Community Center at Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Avenue.

Five city assets are under review: César E. Chávez Park, the Drake Chavez Soccer Fields, the Drake Chavez Greenbelt, the Drake Chavez Connection and the César Chávez Observance Day. The city says the input will inform the City Council's next steps.

The city notes that renaming Chávez Elementary School is a separate process run by the Long Beach Unified School District and is not part of this city effort.

Residents can find participation details and written-comment options on the city website. The city encourages neighbors who use the park and fields to share their views.
