Monday, November 2, 2026 · City · GSM News

The City of Long Beach, in Los Angeles County, California, announced in late October that Police Chief Wally Hebeish will retire on December 31, 2026. Hebeish has served as chief since January 1, 2022, capping a 32-year career in law enforcement.

In its statement, the city thanked Hebeish for leading the Long Beach Police Department through public-safety and community-relations work during his tenure. Hebeish said serving the Long Beach community had been the honor of his career.

The city said it will conduct a nationwide search for the next chief, with details of the process and transition arrangements to be announced. Day-to-day operations will continue under the department's existing chain of command until a successor takes over.

The Long Beach Police Department is one of the larger municipal police agencies in Los Angeles County, serving a coastal city of about 450,000 residents.
