The University of Texas at Arlington, in Tarrant County, Texas, announced on October 5 that it has been awarded $5.8 million in federal funding over five years to continue and expand three TRIO programs that help students and adults overcome barriers to higher education and connect education with career opportunities.

The awards include two Talent Search continuation grants totaling $3 million, each providing $300,000 a year for five years. Each project will serve 600 students annually at four Arlington Independent School District schools, Arlington High School, Sam Houston High School, Workman Junior High School and Rodriguez Junior High School, reaching approximately 1,200 students a year. Talent Search identifies and supports middle and high school students with the potential to succeed in higher education, with an emphasis on students from low-income households and those who would be the first in their families to earn a bachelor's degree, offering academic advising, tutoring, college and career exploration, and help with financial aid applications.

The third award is a $2.8 million Educational Opportunity Centers (EOC) grant, $560,000 a year over five years, serving adults in Tarrant and Dallas counties who face educational, economic or workforce barriers. The EOC helps low-income and first-generation adults complete a high school equivalency, attend a college or university, enter a trade or technical program, pursue an apprenticeship or earn an industry credential, with individualized advising and help with admissions and financial aid.

"These grants allow us to meet students and adults where they are and help them see what is possible through education," said Lisa Thompson, executive director of TRIO Pre-College Programs at UTA. Luisa Havens Gerardo, vice president for enrollment management, said the investments strengthen the connection between education, career goals and the future people want to build. The new grant cycle runs through August 31, 2031. UTA enrolls more than 42,700 students and is the second-largest institution in the University of Texas System.
