Rhode Island Delegation of More Than 70 Travels to Florence for Splendor Festival Marking 60 Years Since the Arno Flood

A Rhode Island delegation of more than 70 people, led from Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, departed on November 1 for Florence, Italy, to take part in the Splendor of Florence festival from November 1 to 8, marking the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Arno River flood and strengthening economic ties between the two cities.
Florence Mayor Sara Funaro invited the delegation in hopes of giving Italian companies a platform to enter the Rhode Island market and fostering ongoing business relationships. The delegation includes civic, business and cultural leaders from across Rhode Island.
During the visit, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra will join musicians from the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino to perform Mozart's Requiem at the Basilica of Santa Croce, and the Rhode Island-Florence Partnership Forum is scheduled for November 5. The 1966 Arno flood affected some 14,000 works of art and remains one of the worst cultural disasters in Florence's modern history. Sponsoring a traveling musician costs $10,000, according to the organizers.
