Spanberger Campaigns in Richmond for Question 2 to Remove Virginia's Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger campaigned in Richmond, the state capital, on November 1 alongside the Human Rights Campaign and Equality Virginia, urging voters to support Question 2 on the ballot. The amendment would remove the state constitution's written ban on same-sex marriage. The push included a community gathering in Carytown and canvassing drives, as organizers sought to maximize turnout before the November 3 vote.
Virginia wrote its same-sex marriage ban into the state constitution about two decades ago. Although the U.S. Supreme Court now protects same-sex marriage nationwide, the ban's language remains in the state constitution. Supporters say removing the outdated text affirms equal rights and insures against future legal changes; opponents argue the amendment's separate references to sex and gender are ambiguous and could be read to affect laws and policies beyond marriage. The amendment's fate rests with voters.
Virginia voters will also decide on three constitutional amendments, including Question 2, on November 3.
