Demolition Begins at Vacant 436 Ena Road in Waikiki: 33-Unit Building to Make Way for Permanent Affordable Housing

Monday, November 2, 2026 · Society · GSM News

In Honolulu, City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii, the city announced that structural demolition of the vacant eight-story building at 436 Ena Road in Waikiki, near Kalakaua Avenue, begins the week of November 2, with site clearing expected to run through February 2027. Contractor R.H.S. Lee, Inc. is using remotely operated Husqvarna DXR 305 demolition robots to take down the former Ena Motoi building floor by floor in a confined space.

The city acquired the roughly 6,000-square-foot parcel in 2018 with federal Community Development Block Grant funds. The 33-unit building previously served low-income residents and people experiencing homelessness and was the first city-run project in Waikiki to accept Housing First vouchers. Housing and Land Management Director Kevin Auger called the demolition an important step toward permanently affordable housing, while noting that the final unit count and affordability levels remain undetermined pending community engagement, environmental review and land-use approvals.
