Rep. Stevens, Beaten in the Primary, Crosses Over to Back Republican Rogers in Michigan Senate Race

In Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, Democratic U.S. Representative Haley Stevens crossed party lines on the eve of the November 3 midterms: after losing the Democratic primary to Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, she switched over the weekend to backing Republican candidate Mike Rogers instead of her own party's nominee, heating up an already tight Senate race in its final weekend.
El-Sayed's campaign said that after Stevens' switch, it raised $2.4 million on Sunday, November 1, its largest single-day fundraising haul, fueled by small-dollar donations. El-Sayed, a physician and former public health official, would become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate if he wins.
Michigan's Senate seat is seen as one of the keys to control of the chamber; voters will decide on November 3.
