Man and Pickup Fall Into Nearly 6-Foot Sinkhole in Phoenix After Heavy Rain; Firefighters Pull Him Out

The Phoenix Fire Department in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, reported on November 2 that a man fell into a nearly 6-foot-deep sinkhole in a home's backyard near 24th Street and Thomas Road at about 3 p.m., with both the man and a pickup truck dropping in as the ground gave way. Crews first stabilized the pickup truck, then pulled the trapped man out and took him to a hospital, where he was last reported to be in stable condition. There was no update on his condition on November 2.
Fire Department spokesperson Captain DJ Lee said the sinkhole was likely caused by the heavy rains that fell in Phoenix on November 1. Police tape was strung up over a portion of the backyard, and no one answered the door at the home.
