Kansas Governor Laura Kelly Raises Concerns Over Federal Election Monitors, Working With Secretary of State's Office

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly said on November 2 in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas, that she is concerned the Trump administration's plan to send election monitors across the country could include immigration enforcement. Kelly said the state is working with the Kansas Secretary of State's office to address concerns about immigration agents near polling places, which could deter some legal voters.
According to the Kansas News Service, the administration has said ICE will not serve as election monitors, but federal officials have left open the possibility of using ICE if there is an 'active public safety threat.' Kelly told the News Service she understands there will be concerns and some potential for that kind of activity, but believes Kansas is in a pretty good place.
The remarks came a day before the November 3 election. Early voting in Kansas closed at noon on November 2, leaving Election Day as voters' final chance to cast ballots.
