Follow-Up: Michigan Names Tommy Carr Starting Quarterback for November 7 Night Game Against Michigan State

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

Michigan head football coach Kyle Whittingham announced at his weekly news conference on November 2 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan, that backup quarterback Tommy Carr will be the Wolverines' starter against rival Michigan State and for the foreseeable future. GSM reported on October 31 that Carr had accounted for three touchdowns in the previous game, a 28-21 win over Rutgers.

Whittingham said Carr will start this week and for the foreseeable future unless something changes. Against Rutgers, Carr completed 22 of 27 passes for 266 yards and a touchdown, rushed 12 times for 54 yards and two more scores, helped Michigan convert 12 of 16 third-down attempts and committed no turnovers. Whittingham said Carr graded out at 91 or 92 in ESPN's quarterback rating, among the highest marks in the country.

Carr began the season as Bryce Underwood's backup and replaced him at halftime of the Week 7 game against Penn State. Whittingham gave no definitive word on Underwood's next step, noting the team had Sunday off and had not yet discussed it with the squad, and praised Underwood for handling the benching professionally and supporting Carr on the sideline. Michigan hosts Michigan State on November 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET, streaming on Peacock.
