Rhode Island Opens $2.5 Million in Brownfield Cleanup Grants: Housing Projects Favored, Applications Due December 11

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced in Providence, Providence County, on November 2 that $2.5 million is available statewide to clean up and redevelop contaminated brownfield properties. Applications opened November 2 and are due by 4 p.m. on December 11, must be submitted electronically, and paper applications will not be accepted. Government agencies, private companies and nonprofit groups are eligible, and projects will be chosen competitively.

The money is the first round from $5 million for brownfield cleanup in the 2024 Green Bond, which nearly 70% of Rhode Island voters approved. This round favors projects that add housing, with redevelopment plans providing affordable or market-rate housing scored favorably. The program has previously awarded more than $20 million to 87 projects in 17 communities.

Department Director Terry Gray said brownfields are one of Rhode Island's clearest opportunities to turn an environmental problem into an economic and community asset. The proposed 2026 Green Economy Bond, Question 5 on the November 3 ballot, includes another $3 million in matching brownfield grants that would fund later rounds if approved.
