South Dakota Buries a Time Capsule to Be Opened at the Nation's Tricentennial in 2076

November 2, 2026, was South Dakota's 137th birthday. That day the America 250 South Dakota Commission buried a time capsule at the Battleship South Dakota Memorial in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, to be opened at the nation's tricentennial in 2076, in one of the final events of the state's semiquincentennial celebration.
State historian and commission chairman Ben Jones could not attend but said in a statement that the event was 'more about the future than the past.' Items chosen by a commission subgroup include Joseph Bottum's book 'This Far Country,' a certificate from Mayor Christine Erickson, letters from Governor Larry Rhoden, challenge coins and flags. Mayor Erickson, Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen and other local dignitaries took part in the burial, and fifth graders from Garfield Elementary School sang the national anthem at the start.
Commissioner and former state lawmaker Tyler Tordsen noted that in May he witnessed the unearthing of a 1976 time capsule at Mark Twain Elementary School and the burial of a new one the same day, also to be opened in 2076.
